MYOB Exo Payroll End of Life: What Happens in October 2026 and Your Options
If your business still runs MYOB Exo Payroll, the calendar is now the most important input into your ERP decision. Exo Payroll stays compliant with Australian tax rates and thresholds only until October 2026. After that, it cannot be relied on to run compliant pay cycles.
What is ending, and when
- November 2025: Exo Payroll annual licences could no longer be renewed.
- October 2026: the last month Exo Payroll remains compliant with local tax rates and thresholds.
- Underneath it all: Exo Payroll runs on a Microsoft FoxPro database, a technology Microsoft no longer supports.
This is not a soft deadline. Once the tax tables stop being updated, every pay run carries compliance risk.
Payday Super is already live
The second forcing factor arrived on 1 July 2026. Under Payday Super, employers must pay super guarantee for each payday, and the contributions must reach employees' super funds within seven business days. The ATO's Small Business Superannuation Clearing House has also closed to existing users as of 30 June 2026.
For businesses on a modern Australian cloud payroll platform, this was largely a configuration change. For businesses on older stacks with weak STP integration, or payroll that batches super quarterly, it is a live compliance and cash flow risk. Money now leaves the business on a rhythm the old quarterly cycle never required you to plan for.
The uncomfortable truth about timing
The conventional advice was to start an ERP evaluation early enough for a six-month implementation to land before October 2026. That window has closed. A full ERP replacement, properly scoped, migrated and tested, cannot go live before October if it has not already started. Any partner who says otherwise is selling you a timeline rather than a plan.
So stop treating this as one decision. It is two, and they run on different clocks.
Decision one: get payroll compliant
Your immediate problem is narrow and well defined: a payroll system that runs compliant pay cycles from October. Judge candidates against a short list:
- STP Phase 2 reporting
- Payday Super handled natively, with contributions reaching funds within seven business days, not through a manual workaround
- A Fair Work modern award engine, if your workforce is award covered
- Clean export of year-to-date data, so the arrangement does not trap you
Treat this as an interim arrangement unless it also happens to be the right long-term answer. Keep the contract short and avoid deep integration work into systems you may replace within 18 months. The goal is compliance and a clean exit, not elegance.
Decision two: choose the platform properly
The good news: MYOB Exo Business, the ERP itself, is not at end of life and remains supported by MYOB. You are not being forced off it this year. It is a mature, stable product in a declining innovation phase, and it will keep running while you make a considered decision.
That is why many Exo customers are using the payroll deadline to review their whole stack, rather than swapping payroll and deferring the bigger question for another three years.
One caution. MYOB's recommended upgrade path is MYOB Acumatica, and for many Australian businesses it is the right answer, particularly in construction and distribution. But it should win on merit. Evaluate it on a level playing field against NetSuite, Wiise, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and anything else that fits your industry and size. A vendor upgrade path is a sales route, not a requirements analysis.
What good sequencing looks like
- Now: shortlist and contract an interim compliant payroll solution, on a short-term commitment.
- Now: start documenting ERP requirements properly, including integrations and five-year growth plans.
- Next quarter: shortlist three or four platforms, issue one common brief, and demo with your own data.
- Following quarters: run a full selection with reference calls, and implement without a compliance deadline over your head.
The businesses that come out of this well separate the urgent from the important. The compliance deadline is urgent. The platform decision is important. Solving the first badly in order to rush the second is how a ten-year software decision gets made in six weeks.
